Unexpected Beauty
The stunning iris pictured above is not what you would typically expect to see pulling into your driveway on a cold January night, but this is what I spotted on my way into the house. Right now my yard is brown and dying, as it is every winter, so that is can come back even bigger and more beautiful in the spring… except for this small little bloom. This would not be an unexpected sighting if it were closer to Easter, but this little flower forging its own path stole my heart tonight. Its beauty is not unexpected, its location is not unexpected, but its timing is.
To go a little meta here, I think this iris’s out of season protest is what I am always striving for with all of my creations: stopping onlookers in their tracks and standing out when no one expects it. In a barren landscape to be a burst of inspiration to make people stop or even better – stop AND think!
… I want people be caught off guard so they can have that moment… inspiration, awakening, certainty, joy… so they can come back it whenever they want to.
… I want to connect with people, but through unexpected ways.
